About Biogenics

Welcome. This site is a collection of things that may or may not belong together.

It began—as many things do—with a question: what is life, really? Not in the philosophical sense (though that creeps in), but in the biological, psychological, occasionally frustrating sense. Over the years, in between patients, papers, and cups of mediocre hospital coffee, something started forming. A pattern. Or maybe a theory. Or maybe just a hunch.

Biogenics is what it became: a framework for understanding living systems—not as linear machines or spiritual riddles, but as messy, beautiful networks of self-organisation and self-production. Cells do it. Societies do it. Maybe even algorithms.

It draws from psychiatry, psychology, systems theory, complexity science, and AI. It might be a grand unifying theory. Or it might just be a way to see things more clearly. Or something else entirely.

And then there’s Fiction—a novel that started as a distraction and became something else. Part mystery, part thought experiment, part meditation on belief and identity. It asks what happens when the story you’ve always told yourself starts to unravel—and whether a new one might be waiting underneath.

As for me? I'm Steve Ellen. Psychiatrist, writer, occasional optimist - and lover of all technology, especially AI. I’ve spent a few decades in clinical practice and even longer trying to explain things that can’t be easily explained.

You won’t find easy answers here. But you might find some new questions.

And maybe, with luck, a better way to hold the old ones.
